St. Thomas Players present “Almost, Maine”

St. Thomas Players is proud to present Almost, Maine, a laugh-out-loud comedy portraying real people caught in surreal moments. The town of Almost could be Salisbury. Love gets lost; love gets found. There is nothing in this play that you won’t understand, especially when it’s performed by eight of the most talented young actors around, several of whom are graduates of the renowned CatawbaCollege theatre program, including director Justin Dionne.

Bring your fishing buddies; bring your book club. Group tickets available (8 or more) at a 25% discount.

Almost, Maine will be performed at the Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on the campus of Catawba College behind Keppel Auditorium, August 3-6, 10-13, at7:30 pm.

½ price ticket night is August 3, opening night (purchase at the door, first come, first served). A class in fiction-writing will be held Saturday, August 6, and Saturday, August 13, 11:00 am-1:00 pm
at Center for Faith & the Arts, 207 W. Harrison St. The cost is $35. Taught by Jenny Hubbard, Writer-in-Residence at Center for Faith & the Arts and author of “Paper Covers Rock”, a critically acclaimed novel for young adults

The first session will focus on tools of the trade; the second session will be a workshop of the fiction produced by students in the class. You need to be able to attend both sessions. Experience is welcome but not required.

Tickets for the world premiere of the Jenny Hubbard play “Pinocchio’s Sister” are available at Literary Book Post in Salisbury, and at http://stthomasplayers.org. All shows are 7:30 PM, June 15-18 and 22-25 in the Florence Busby Corriher Theater on the campus of Catawba College (behind Keppel Auditorium). Tickets are $10 ($5 for students). June 15 is discount night, with half price tickets at the door.

“Facing Uncertainty” workshop

This June 4^th day-long experiential workshop will explore themes of faith in the face of uncertainty. Through spontaneous movement, coloring or painting, writing, and reflection, we will meditate on Rilke’s famous quote, “Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart/ and try to love the questions themselves.” The workshop will begin at 10 am and end at 3:00 pm on June 4, 2011 and will be held at the Center for Faith and the Arts at 207 W. Harrison Street in Salisbury.

“Facing Uncertainty” is for beginning writers or artists as well as for seasoned ones. Paper, pencils, and pastels will be supplied. Bring preferred art supplies and a journal or notebook.

Facilitated by Myra Tannehill, MA, EdS, who has completed two semesters with the North Carolina Expressive Arts Therapy Institute. She grew up in Salisbury, NC and teaches in the English department at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. Her specialty is creative writing. Myra is also a visual and fiber artist represented by Carlton Gallery in Banner Elk, NC. She enjoys life with her husband and teen-aged step-daughter, a big dog and three cats.

St.Thomas Players announces auditions for Almost, Maine

Show Dates: August 4-6 & 10-13, 2011

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Parts are available for performers who can play mid-20s to late 30s.

Art exhibit: Deja vu

New exhibit at Center for Faith & the Arts features Barbara Harris Richmond, Stephen Hoke and Luther Sowers

Center for Faith & the Arts of Salisbury will be hosting a new art exhibit, “Déjá vu,” in the Center’s galleries March 12-April 22, featuring works by artists Barbara Harris Richmond, Stephen Hoke and Luther Sowers.

An opening reception will be held Saturday, March 12, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Center. The public is invited to this free event. There will be refreshments, and the artists will be at the reception to answer questions about the exhibit, which includes paintings and three-dimensional works.

The title “Déjá vu” was chosen because the show is a return for these artists who were some of the prize-winners in last summer’s artist invitational, “Abstraction and Beyond” sponsored by CFA.

The first-place winner from last summer’s show will be featured in a separate exhibit, “Justin R. Christenbery: Breaking Through,” which is being hosted by CFA at Looking Glass Artist Collective, 405 N. Lee St., from April 2-16.

Center for Faith & the Arts is located at 207 W. Harrison St., in the lower level of Haven Lutheran Church.

Auditions for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”

St. Thomas Players will be holding auditions for their next production, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” on Monday, Feb. 7 and Wednesday, Feb.9 at 7 p.m. each night, at Center for Faith & the Arts, located in the lower level of Haven Lutheran Church, 207 W. Harrison St. Auditions consist of cold readings from the script. Missy Barnes, associate professor of theatre at Catawba College, will direct the show, which will run April 7-9 and 13-16.
